Tiffany Brar

Tiffany Brar (born 1988) is an Indian social worker, and founder of Jyothirgamaya Foundation, a non-profit organization which empowers the blind in all spheres of life, enabling them to gain necessary skills for a successful and smooth existence. It also has a mobile blind school, which adopts the unique approach where training is given to blind in rural areas at their door step.
==Biography==
Tiffany Brar a north Indian by origin was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She became blind very shortly after her birth due to a retinal disease. Being the daughter of an Indian military officer, she had the advantage of traveling far and wide. Being blind, verbal communication was very important, and as a result she became multilingual. During her childhood she learned to speak five Indian languages fluently. She studied in schools for the blind, integrated schools, and military schools which were not at all specialized for the blind. After completing her primary education in Kerala, her father got transferred to west Bengal Darjeeling district, where she studied in the Mary Scot homes for the blind.
The demise of her mother left her in a situation to learn many things herself. During her school days, as a blind person she faced many challenges. For instance, she was made to sit at the back of the class and at times was not even allowed to answer questions. Her Braille notes either arrived too late, or did not arrive at all. Due to her blindness she was sheltered and protected by her parents. She did not know how to venture out independently, and take care of her own affairs until her early 20's. She was constantly relying on sighted people to take her to school, college, and other places. She also learned daily living skills very late in life. This was indeed a major challenge.

Constant segregation and isolation by her classmates, and her not being included in various events on account of being blind, also instilled in her an inner drive to change the situation of the blind in Kerala. Though north Indian by origin, she feels that the rest of her destiny lies in Kerala, where she presently resides. It is her challenges that she faced as a child during her school and college days, that has made her determined to change the current situation of the blind.
After completing her schooling, she went on to do her degree in English literature from the Government women’s college Trivandrum in the year 2006. After the completion of her degree in 2009, she started working in Braille without borders.She had to travel to various organisation where she came across many under privileged blind people who were confined within the four walls of their home and lack proper training.This urged her forward to initiated Jyothirgamaya

After working there for two years as a receptionist, she pursued her B.Ed in special education (visual impairment) from Sree Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University Coimbatore. In 2012 she started running Jyothirgamaya (leading to light) mobile school for the blind.

She became a living example to her blind participants and now travels alone not only in Trivandrum, her place of residence, but also to other parts of the state and abroad.
